Description: Falco was instructed to design and implement a solution to a failing flood alleviation scheme servicing six properties in Waterloo near London’s South Bank.
A flow model analysis carried out by our engineer revealed that the existing 1210 single-phase pump was unable to cope during periods of heavy rainfall, which had caused substantial disruption and a significant number of callouts by Thames Water. We advised replacement with a 1215 three-phase pump.
This challenging project required considerable collaboration with a number of different stakeholders. We worked closely with Thames Water framework supplier, Pump Technical Services (PTS) to design the new scheme. Our proposed solution needed to be housed in a street-mounted kiosk so we also liaised with planning consultants Studio Charette and the London Borough of Southwark to gain planning permission and a lawful development certificate (LDC) for the works. We also worked alongside UKPN and Thames Water’s meter suppliers Drax during the electrical works.
Our innovative solution incorporated a number of value engineering initiatives which helped reduce programme and costs. It involved replacing the existing pump and baseplate while retaining the pump tank which avoided the costs and disruption associated with excavating and removing the existing cover slab which was located beneath the footpath.
Being a NERS-accredited contractor, we were able to provide UKPN with access to the underground infrastructure, excavating and exposing the ductwork to allow them to install new joint and connection to power the new scheme while Drax installed a new meter in the
kiosk. We installed the new pump, accompanying pipework and threephase control panel while water flows to the site were controlled by the presence of a combi tanker.
