Falco Construction’s experience of successfully delivering flood alleviation schemes for Thames Water since January 2018 was a key factor in the decision to award it a new £1.5 million contract.

The 12-month contract let through the Skanska, MWH Global and Balfour Beatty joint venture (SMB) started in April 2019 and will see Falco Construction install a number of anti-flood devices (known as FLIPs) across Thames Water’s underground infrastructure.

“Our experience of successfully installing FLIPs across London over the course of the last 8 years together with our competitive pricing strategy and proposals to limit disturbance to the local communities combined to get us over the line during the tendering process,” says Falco Construction’s Managing Director, Brendan Griffin.

In the last 18 months alone the company has delivered over 150 FLIPs installations to the capital’s pipework for the Morrison Utility Services & Galliford Try joint venture (MGjv) as part of Thames Water’s AMP6 Business Plan.

“Working for MGjv, Falco Construction have delivered the construction of FLIPs over the past two years in a professional, efficient and timely manner”, commented Andy Wolfe, Senior Project Manager at MGJV, “As a successful delivery team we have received numerous written commendations in what have been very complicated installations.”

The installation of FLIP pumps serves to prevent foul flooding of basement properties when there is a surcharge in an adjacent public sewer.

The Works consist of the construction of a FLIP pump station adjacent to, or within, the affected property which could be a driveway, carriageway, or basement. This involves creating a combined sewer, raising main and associated works, constructing a FLIP manhole to house the FLIP unit, installation of an external wall mounted FLIP control panel with all associate electrical connections.

Works can be undertaken in domestic or commercial properties and Falco will always strive to minimise disruption to clients. Where possible measures will be taken to avoid accessing occupied parts of properties, i.e. by accessing via lightwells etc, however where this is not possible Falco will always ensure that properties are left clean, tidy and safe at the end of every shift, and will carryout finishing works to the satisfaction of the client.
