Terry McHugh

Background

Terry has over 40 years construction industry experience in the civil engineering and utilities sector managing a variety of construction & infrastructure projects in the commercial, water, energy, highway & rail sectors.

Terry started his post-graduate career in 1991 at MJ Clancy & Sons (now the Clancy Group) as a Site Engineer and worked his way up to Site Agent then Project Manager during 8 years at the Harefield-based civils firm, working mainly on tunnelling projects.

In 1999 he moved to Enterprise where he project-managed a variety of Thames Water AMP 2-3 North London Sewerage schemes as well as spending two years working in its Rail Division.

During a three-year period at Laing O’Rourke Terry helped deliver AMP 4 sewerage infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects in London before a return to Enterprise in 2009 where he worked on the Severn Trent AMP 5 sewerage infrastructure framework.

Since joining Falco in 2011 he has performed a number of roles ranging from Contracts Management, Business Development & Operations Director before becoming the Director responsible for Health, Safety & Wellbeing in 2021.

Responsibilities

As Director of Health, Safety & Wellbeing, Terry strives to make working for Falco as enriching and positive an experience as possible for all colleagues, as well as ensuring that our HSEQ Management system remains fit for purpose. Working in collaboration with Mates in Mind and the Lighthouse Construction charity, he is leading the campaign to “Start the Conversation” about mental health & wellbeing in all parts of the Falco business.

He takes a particular interest in maximising opportunities for continual improvement and applies the Plan, Do, Check, Act principles to all areas of business activity. He places great value in learning from incident & near misses and has invested in developing Falco’s corporate incident investigation skills.

He performs site inspections and engagement tours regularly and heads monthly management meetings to discuss performance, feedback from the workforce and customers as well as results of external audits such as ISO 9001/14001/45001, regulatory authorities and clients.

Terry also provides cover for active operational oversight during periods of planned and unplanned colleague absences and remains actively involved in securing new work streams for the business.
