Thames Water’s Direct Delivery Team appointed Falco to deliver a design and build project to increase storm flow capacity at a sewerage treatment facility (STW) in Hungerford, Berkshire. The project was awarded under the Runway 0 Framework.
The majority of the design was delivered in-house with just the MEICA and reinforced concrete elements subcontracted to Xylem Water Solutions and Fairhurst respectively. The works were subject to a very tight deadline so our design team collaborated closely with Thames Water Asset standards team to agree a solution that provided the required performance while using products that were available within the project timescales.
Our solution involved repurposing a redundant 300m3 aeration tank on-site to store the additional storm flow required by the decommissioning of a neighbouring STW.
The site works were mostly carried out by our in-house operations team and involved:
- Installing new submersible pumps to transfer storm flows to re-purposed aeration tank.
- Providing new DN250 rising main across the site from storm tanks to aeration tank pipework was installed as a mix of ductile iron and PE
- Installing new mixer pump and pipework in the re-purposed aeration tank
- Providing new storm tank outlet with actuated control valve at tank invert to discharge to existing outlet chamber, all existing wall penetrations other than high level overflow to be grouted up and sealed
- Modifying the existing 150DI pipe on storm tank 1 to allow flows to be discharged to storm tanks
- Installing two local control panels containing the starters for the pumps and mixers respectively. All instrumentation was wired back to the local panels and from there via multicore cables all control and signals communicated to the Inlet MCC
- Installation of signals from the local control panels communicated over hardwired multicore cabling to existing MCC/PLC and from there all alarms were communicated to the site’s existing telemetry outstations
