Project Overview
Falco was appointed to carry out all the civils works associated with the installation of a new omni bund transformer base and enclosure to replace an existing transformer at AWRE Substation, located on MOD land.  The work consisted of the construction of a new transformer bund, site boundary, structural steels, ducting and enabling the decommission of the old transformer.

The Works
Throughout the project there was a heavy focus on coordination with the MOD regarding security due to live firing along the access road to the site to ensure our site team remained safe.

The first phase of work centered on the removal of decommissioned infrastructure and the construction of a new transformer bay. The work was completed offline outside of the existing transformer bay. Working closely with the client, Falco value engineered the use of lightweight concrete to build the bund on top of the existing concrete base rather than the planned CFA piles.

Security and safety enhancements were delivered as part of the upgrade. A W-form palisade fence was installed around the new transformer bay and fitted with anti-climb spinner guards.

Engineering & Delivery Considerations
Isolation procedures, energisation strategies, and safe working clearances were managed to minimise disruption to ongoing network operations. We liaised with Natural England to ensure that an existing bat roost was not disturbed whilst delivering this project. We worked closely with our client’s design team to value engineer-out the piling requirements and champion the use of lightweight concrete to overcome the challenge of the poor ground conditions.

Project Outcome
Falco successfully delivered the AWRE Primary Substation civils package with improvements to oil containment, drainage, fencing, and cable management thereby improving on both environmental protection and site safety.

Through careful phasing and coordination under the direction of UK Power Networks, the work was completed while maintaining continuity of supply and minimising operational disruption.

Client Testimonial

From MD to site workers, Falco worked as a team to ensure our new foul pumping station met the highest standards, was finished on-time and within budget. Falco’s friendly but highly professional approach helped guide us through a potentially high-risk project. We would recommend them without hesitation and look forward to working with them again in the future.
